A pre-war gate post in Garapan marking the entrance to Nan’yo’-ji, a South Sea Buddhist temple, was restored after it was broken into pieces when struck by a vehicle on Jan. 6. The gate post is the sole remnant of the temple and the adjoining Saipan Domestic Science Girls School and
subsequent Girls High School during the Japanese administration of the islands. The funds for the restoration of the gate post were raised and the post was repaired by the efforts of Pacific Eagle, the Marianas Visitors Authority, Jyodo Assembly in Japan, and the NMI Historic Preservation Office. The driver of the vehicle also made a contribution. A rededication ceremony was performed on June 13.
