Simon Sanchez High School junior Madison Orland won the 2017 Congressional Art Competition for Guam with a piece in colored pencil titled “Chamorro Resiliency.” Orland’s entry was selected from 34 other artists from eight public and private schools by a panel of local artists.

Orland’s piece will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Complex in Washington, D.C., for one year. In addition, Orland received two roundtrip tickets to the nation’s capital and a stipend of $500 to attend a reception and award ceremony.

The Congressional Art Competition is a nation-wide annual high school arts competition sponsored by the Congressional Institute and members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Some 650,000 high school students have participated since the competition began in 1982.
