In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Matson Inc. named one of its vessels Papa Mau after renowned Carolinian master navigator Pius “Mau” Piailug. Members of the Piailug family arrived from islands throughout Micronesia to attend a naming and blessing ceremony held on Sept. 17 at the Port Authority of Guam. Piailug, who passed away in 2010, is known for reviving traditional navigation by guiding a Hawaiian canoe on a 34-day voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti using nothing but traditional navigation methods.
