Lyon announced on May 19 the promotions of Ronald G. Gonzales to president and Jiro Sumada to chief operating officer. The two have more than 70 years of island government, infrastructure and community experience.
Bank of Hawaii was named the top performing bank in the nation for 2013 in the April 2014 edition of the ABA Banking Journal, a leading national trade publication. Bank of Hawaii was ranked second the prior year. The rankings are based on SEC filings for public institutions and regulatory filings for non-public and foreign-owned institutions and are prepared by Capital Performance Group, Washington, D.C.
Margaret Hattori- Uchima has been named dean of the University of Guam School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Hattori-Uchima has been a faculty member at the university since August 2001. She has been a registered nurse for 27 years and an educator for more than 15 years. Hattori-Uchima received her associate’s and bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Hawaii. She earned her master’s from the University of Phoenix and her doctorate from Villanova University, both in nursing.
The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded LEED Silver certification to Guam Community College’s newly renovated Foundation Building. The Foundation Building, which opened in November 2012, is the second building on the campus to be LEED certified. The $5.8 million, 21,000-square-foot structure was designed by Michael Makio of Taniguchi Ruth Makio Architects and constructed by Orion Corp.
The FHP Health Center announced on May 13 it was awarded a three-year term of accreditation for magnetic resonance imaging as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology. With this accreditation, patients covered by Medicare or Medicaid can now receive MRI services at FHP.
Mary A.Y. Okada was appointed to President Barack Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The commission is charged with working to improve the quality of life of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through increased participation in and access to federal programs. Its members will advise the president on ways to engage Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country and to improve their health, education, environment and well-being.
Joseph F. Artero- Cameron has been appointed president of the Pacific Island Museums Association for a three-year term. He fills the position of past president Adi Meretui Ratunabuabua. Artero- Cameron is currently the president of the Department of Chamorro Affairs and president of the Guam Museum.
Jonathan Kriegel has been appointed president and CEO of Docomo Pacific Inc. Kriegel brings more than 20 years of industry experience having recently led Vodafone Group’s partner markets business and business development in Asia. Kriegel has also served at First Pacific Co. as chief operating officer of mobile and managing director of paging in Indonesia and as deputy group treasurer in Hong Kong. Kriegel holds a master’s in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s in history from Pomona College (Calif.).
Joseph Pereira has been promoted to vice president/senior project manager of the Bank of Guam. Pereira holds a 2006 bachelor’s in engineering from Arizona State University. He joined the Bank of Guam in 2011 as assistant vice president/project manager.
Thomas Fetan was appointed chairman of the Yap Chamber of Commerce board of directors on May 6. Andy Choor was appointed as vice chairman. Other officers of the Yap Chamber include Carmen Gurungin as treasurer and Jeffrey Abalbai as secretary.
On April 17, the University of Guam board of regents renewed Robert A. Underwood‘s contract as president for two more years with the option to extend for an additional year. The option would be exercised mutually by both Underwood and the board as part of a transition period to new leadership. Underwood has served as president of the university since 2008.
First Hawaiian Bank announced on May 20 that Robert S. Harrison, the bank’s president and CEO since 2012, will become the chairman of the board following the retirement of Donald G. Horner as chairman. Horner has served as board chairman since 2008 and will remain on the board as well as on the board of BancWest Corp. Harrison will also retain his roles as president and CEO. Harrison has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and joined First Hawaiian as a business banker in 1996. The board also announced two new additions to the board: Matthew Cox, president and CEO of Matson Inc., and Scott Wo, chief investment officer of C.S. Wo & Sons Ltd. These appointments follow the retirements from the board of Dr. Richard T. Mamiya and Robert C. Wo.
The University of Guam board of regents elected William Leon Guerrero, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Bank of Guam, as chairperson and Regent Marcos Fong, CEO of Foremost Foods Inc./Coca-Cola Beverage (Guam) Co., and managing director of Glimpses of Guam and Subway Restaurants of Guam, as vice chairperson on April 17. Leon Guerrero has been a member of the board since 2007 and previously served as vice chairperson. Also elected were Regent Antoinette D. Sanford, president of Sanford Technology, as treasurer of the University of Guam board of regents, Regent Mariflor Herrero as representative to the Regent Nominating Council, and Regent-Elect Vinni Orsinias student regent.
The U.S. Department of Treasury recertified Community First Guam Federal Credit Union as a Community Development Financial Institution. The Community Development Financial Institution Fund administers programs supporting economic development and community revitalization in rural areas. This is Community First’s third certification term. The credit union is the only one in Guam to hold this certification.
Paul D. Leon Guerrero, chief financial officer for Calvo’s Insurance Underwriters, and Pedro R. Martinez, deputy general manager of the A.B. Won Pat International Airport, Guam, were re-elected to serve another three-year term on the Coast360 Federal Credit Union’s board of directors. Leon Guerrero was selected as board chairman and Martinez as vice chairman. Matthew P. Quinata was selected as treasurer, and Vicente M. Concepcion was selected as secretary. Other members of the board include Angelita P. Mendiola,Ignacio C. Santos and Johnny P. Taitano.
Nathalie Neese has joined the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa as chief accountant, effective April 21. Neese relocated to Guam from Detroit, where she worked as associate director of finance at the Detroit Marriott Southfield. Neese holds a bachelor’s in business administration and accounting from the University of Phoenix.
Redintor “Red” Matienzo has been promoted from restaurant supervisor to restaurant manager at Fisherman’s Cove at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa, effective April 1. Matienzo joined the Hilton in September 2013 from the Hyatt Regency Guam, where he was food and beverage manager for Al Dente Restaurant. He has nearly 15 years of food and beverage experience and holds an associate’s in computer science from Lipa City College in the Philippines.
Bank of Guam on May 16 announced the promotion of Alexandra L.G. Taitano to vice president/wealth management advisor with the bank’s Wealth Management Division. Taitano joined the bank in 2011. She has previously worked with Merrill Lynch (Guam) as a financial advisor and with ASC Trust Corp. as a special projects manager. She is a 2005 graduate of the University of Guam.
Donald Capelle, speaker of the Marshall Islands Parliament (Nitijela) was elected on April 10 by the Pacific Islands Development Bank’s board of governors as the chairman of the board. Guam Gov. Edward B. Calvo was elected vice chairman, and Yap State Gov. Sebastian Anefal was elected secretary.
Donna Muna Quinata was appointed vice president of AutoSpot Mitsubishi on April 19 at Guam Auto Spot. Quinata had previously been a field sales associate with Atkins Kroll Inc., a position she held since 1991.
DKSH honored Edna Perez, Avelina Rala and Zechariah Daniels for top sales of Breitling timepieces for 2013. The three employees were presented with certificates on May 1 at the Caronel Watch Center in Tumon Sands Plaza.
On April 17, the Judiciary of Guam was selected from more than 2,600 nominations made by service members as a finalist for the Top 30 Employers category of the 2014 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Judiciary of Guam was honored at the ESGR annual awards gala on April 25 at the Pacific Star Resort & Spa.
Coast360 Federal Credit Union announced on June 9 the appointment of Gener Deliquina as the new chief executive officer. Deliquina has more than 20 years of experience in finance and accounting and most recently served as the credit union’s chief financial officer. He holds a bachelor’s in accounting from the University of Guam.
Attorney Joaquin C. Arriola Sr. was awarded the 2014 Hustisia Award on May 2 by the Judiciary of Guam, the U.S. District Court of Guam and the Guam Bar Association. The Hustisia Award is given annually in conjunction with Law Week activities to a recipient who has contributed to improving the administration of justice and good government. Arriola’s legal career has spanned some 57 years.
